The Six Benefits of Toll Blending

Toll Blending is a common service for chemical companies (e.g.: “toll blender”) to manufacture/fulfill chemistry blending for a partner in order to reduce the partner’s production risks or capital investments. RBP Chemical Technology works with partners around the globe to provide this service, as well as, to optimize their chemical processes. Here are six reasons why customers turn to RBP for their toll blending needs.

1. No capital investment or equipment upgrade requirements.
You don’t need to invest in new equipment or upgrade your existing equipment to make your new product. This, along with not having to pay for space to store the equipment, saves you an incredible amount of money and overhead.

2. No need for specialized personnel.
We all know that labor costs account for a huge chunk of running any business, so it’s always beneficial when you don’t have to hire specialized personnel. When you hire staff to do toll blending, not only will you have to cover the costs of wages and benefits, you’ll also be on the hook for rigorous hazardous communication, resource conservation and Recovery Act training, as well as additional expenses for dealing with hazardous waste. With Toll Blending from RBP, you won’t have these expense.

3. Relieves inventory carrying costs and floor space.
Toll blending allows you to reduce inventory carrying costs for either raw materials or packaging and finished goods. You’re essentially eliminating the need for floor space.

4. Increases operating capital by decreasing maintenance expenditures.
You may see if you’re blending your own chemistry some operating capital. In-house chemical blending seems like a great cost-saving measure, but many companies forget the long-term expenditures – like maintenance costs. A toll blender eliminates these expenses. By not contracting with a Toll Blender like RBP, you will need someone who could potentially fix pumps, reactors, scrubbers, which can get very costly, very fast.

5. Eliminates regulatory requirements (OSHA; RoHS; EPA; DHS; DOT, etc.).
Chemical blenders are regulated by a number of agencies, including:

  • OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)
  • RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive)
  • Reach (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals)
  • EPA (Environmental Protection Agency or Administration Department)
  • Homeland Security
  • Department of Transportation
  • DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency)

Each agency has different reporting or expertise requirements that must be adhered to. With a Toll Blender like RBP, much of these expertise and reporting duties will shift away from your company – reducing stress on your logistics, environmental, health and safety departments.

6. Leverage/partner with a toll blender’s human capital and analytical expertise.
When it comes to toll blending, really should think about a toll blender that has some human capital and expertise. This includes analytical and equipment expertise from both a chemist and a Ph.D., (which we have on staff here at RBP). This is especially helpful when you start talking about more robust testing required for some chemistries.
